Refuel: AI-Powered Holistic Human Performance App for the U.S. Air Force

We joined Refuel at a pivotal moment, right as an initial Air Force research effort was gaining traction. The goal was to build a clean, intuitive mobile interface for an advanced machine learning model focused on total force fitness.

Our designs and development work gave the project the momentum it needed to:

- Secure multiple additional rounds of funding

- Reach successful beta deployment

- Complete testing within Air Force units

The full program ultimately received over $1.37 million through AFWERX and the SBIR process. Our contributions proved so central that we later stepped in as program manager, leading all design and technical efforts from that point forward.

Key Technical Achievements

- Connected the app to hundreds of data sources

- Integrated raw streams from major wearables: Apple Health, Garmin, Oura Ring

- Built custom clinical surveys to capture nuanced inputs

- Presented complex data through clear, simple charts

- Delivered timely, context-aware insights and notifications

Standout Feature

One of our favorite features was the real-time PT test simulator: after every run, airmen instantly saw how that effort would score on the official Air Force running test, helping them track progress and stay motivated day after day. Due to being in San Antonio, we were able to tests parts of our design and application at a local Air Force base too; that was exciting.

Refuel became an incredibly fulfilling project. We helped airmen improve across every dimension of performance; physical, mental, spiritual, and nutritional. By partnering with additional data providers and subject matter experts, we created a richer, more complete ecosystem that supports service members in deeply meaningful ways.

This was technology built in service of human potential — designed for those who serve our nation.
